About this Blog

I maintained this blog as an Instructor in the Professional Educator Diploma at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt. I was privileged to teach teachers from a variety of public and private schools in Egypt. I was humbled by the experience as I learnt a lot from them. The course focused on integrating technology into the classroom. This blog showcases many of the teachers’ projects during the course.  Though the course has ended, its memory remains vivid in my mind and heart. My work with teachers fuelled my current research on teacher professionalization policies and the politics of teacher professionalism in Egypt. I am currently working on my research as a PhD Student in Educational Studies, at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

New Digital Era with Web 2 tools. Thank you Dr Mary our Great Teacher ! Mohamed Elhaw

We have learned a lot from Dr Mary. she has successfully involved us in the designing and planing environment and encouraged us with her energetic and loving spirit and this is,I think, the most important element that empowered all learners in the class.
Her excellent way of teaching made us to learn through doing and practice in a co-operative and collaborative atmosphere.
starting with showing us videos and asking learners to comment on them was an excellent start that attracted all learners and gave them enthusiasm to go further into a world of an attractive technology-based experiences of teaching and learning.
What I liked most about the course is the way of teaching that tended to make a balance between the role of the teacher and that of the learner.we have got, indeed, the opportunity to be active learners involving in the learning process.
I have liked all teaching tools we learned during the course especially those using multimedia and interactive tools.
wikis and blogs are excellent learning tools that facilitate communication and collaborative skills that are needed in the 21 st century.
One of excellent tools i liked is Quiz maker.this software allows you to enrich tests with additional info slides and multimedia content including audio, video, images and formulas
I love iSpring because We want to teach. We want to train. We want to communicate. We want to educate. We don’t want to program computers.
With iSpring Quizmaker you can generate interactive Flash quizzes with multimedia and branching. I have used this tool to create interactive tools online enriched multimedia. with the help of this tool one can dive into all the advanced features for e-Learning development provided by iSpring Learn.this link gives you more information.

I can’t believe what I can do now.

Now I have my own blog  which my students can visit . I also will have an Edmodo account  which is my favourite tool from all we have learnt . I communicate with my students via facebook but it is not  an educational tool there are ads which I don’t want also I feel it’s more social than educational – sometimes I ask them to write a comment about a post I made they reply happy birthday to you Mrs Ghada  – I saw how teachers all over the world  communicate with students and the most important I learnt how to update my teaching  and how to become a part of my students’ life how to be a technological native not immigrant thanks to you Dr Mary .

  • I liked Hot potatoes because it helps me to have good and fast worksheets and exams .
  • Also the Flash card creator is very important  for designing cards for lessons
  • Powtoon is also very creative programme to make presentations accompanied with animation and photos. It is so good for my primary stage students .

I learnt , I enjoyed , I spent a useful time , Thank you Dr Mary and all my colleges .

A Worth Reading Post: A Reflective Summary

Because our world is changing at a very rapid pace and the needs of the workplace are evolving, in my point of view it was very important for us to discuss in the course how to link the education that our students are receiving with the essential 21st century skills that students need in order to succeed both as students, and later as members of the workforce. I found this topic of great benefit for me to implement it in my class. Continue reading

My Favourite web 2.0 tool

blog image

My favorite tool is the blog, because I could express my own ideas in it.  My blog is about an English Magazine that is an activity in it I can share my students various ideas and experiences. The blog is very suitable for such a kind of activities, it shows them more interesting and funny, by this way it will attract my students to follow it and share with their ideas and comments.
The blog is a very easy tool to interact with my students, it doesn’t need any complex procedures to make them understand my target and like it, they will be excited to know more about it and try to make individual contributions in it to satisfy their desires of sharing and expressing their own opinions. Competition will play a big role in their sharing in blog especially as it is an activity of various subjects that they like and interested in.
The blog gives my students chance to search, analyze and develop their skills of reading and writing that will help me as a teacher during class, they will be aware of more subjects than they have as curriculum.
I intend to use it in my class by telling my students about it and explain them its targets and try to encourage them to share me in it by their items and comments.
My blog is about activity and activity worth is 20 marks in their evaluation, I’ll tell them they will get the twenty marks by their sharing if they like it. Every thing they do in it will be appreciated to give them trust to continue, if they like to share me they have choice to make it as their activity evaluation.
I liked also the Wiki as a group work in which we exchanged our knowledge and experiences. By the wiki I made new friends who are very wonderful.

Using Blogs in Education

The use of blogs in education is a terrific tool to integrate technology in teaching practice to foster students’ learning. I totally like the idea of using it as an effective learning environment for diary entry as a tool of communication between study groups beyond the traditional classrooms. Some learners may not be active participants inside classrooms, so it is motivating for them to practice collaborative learning and discussion. When used properly, blogging can meet students’ needs and their love of modern technology applications. They daily work with computers and surf the web pages, so integrating it into education will make sense.

This tool can help students learn in a helpful modern environment in a 21st century education system. As well as supporting curriculum and instruction, a blog can be a key instrument of assessments. It also enables teachers to focus more on innovative teaching.

How I intend to use blogs in my class:

I can use blogs as a complement to my existing work at school. I can create a blog with contents linked to the pedagogy in addition to other extra motivating activities. It will foster students’ learning as I can post class requirements, assignments, handouts and so on. The shared posted materials can be accessed at school and at home, Students respond at any appropriate time to be to collaborate effectively. When students send their comments, they collaboratively help each other to construct their knowledge.

I’m interested in making it work as a portal to extra activities to develop student’s English language learning, like reading comprehension passages and stories and reflect on them and it can be as a step to creating their own ones. Therefore, they provide a space for students to develop their writing skills. It isn’t necessary for learners to be in the same grade, it will be wonderful if students from older classes collaborate and help the younger ones to share thoughts and learn from each other. It’s very helpful to post my students further assignment activities to work on. I think that some learners will not feel worried if they know that they are not graded. Students will find it very enjoyable when they are posted some references to other interesting content like online interactive games and activities to enrich their information and enhance learning. What I want to do is to challenge my students when using such activities to inspire them participate interactively and enhances their literacy skills.

Students can also work in groups on projects or to research on specific topics covered over the semester and write findings discussing and commenting on each other. Then they can be engaged in peer learning as well as performing academically. They can write about a certain beneficial topic they may like and they reflect and discuss together sharing their opinions.

To improve students’ higher-thinking skills, I can post them challenging brainteasers which require them to think cooperatively and critically to solve a problem. They may like the idea of equity of roles since they work in a group and have equal opportunities to share their thoughts. They will improve their writing skills. In addition, I can get feedback and information about their progress.

Blogs have a very important advantage; the archive feature which help to record the students’ work and their ongoing learning. They can keep an eye on their advance and monitor how they developed their thinking and writing skills. Blogs are regarded a digital portfolios to record and protect students’ work. This feature can greatly help me easily evaluate them and facilitate analyzing their work as I have a reference.  Another important feature is content refreshment as I and my students could add different pages in varied categories and increase and change their content. It can be easily updated. The commenting system is very important.

In addition to posting the class news and study hints, parents can stay in touch with their sons’ instructors to be informed and more engaged in their children’s education. To enhance home- school connections, parents can share and send their comments, the matter which can help them be informed about our classes and build such an outstanding community. Moreover, it is fruitful when teachers provide advice to each other, share thoughts, ideas for teaching, lesson plans, and useful educational topics with other teachers and reflect on them to share experience productively.

Moreover, I can teach my students how to set up their own blogs, after their parents’ and the school’s permission, in which they can post interesting content and how they have to comment properly on each other’s posts. I have to let them realize the importance of their published words and the responsibility of writing, so they can practice writing and respond to each other considering ethics and respecting each other’s point of view.

For more awesome ideas to make Blogging educationally sound for teaching and students:

It will be wonderful to give the chance for them to participate and feel that their voice can be heard in a different way, especially for those who are shy to participate directly with their peers. In addition, they feel motivated and enjoy their feelings of identity and self –efficacy and their ownership over their own learning. This creates a wonderful space of discussion and creative dialogue to interact flexibly. They will feel impressed to see how much progress they have made by working collaboratively and interactively.

Blogs ensure real opportunities for students to share ideas. They help enhance scaffolding their learning and the feeling of responsibility towards their learning. I just offer the needed instructional tips, and then they start develop their research abilities independently. It is a great tool to engage students and strengthen the bonds between them and their teachers inside and outside classrooms via interactive communication. The easy use and application of blogs has made it possible to reach a great potential of success in delivering the posts to viewers through flexible resources. With the help of some great blogging platforms to start with, especially the free ones, I don’t have to be an expert to make my blog see the light. Using blogs has really added to my professional and digital skills personally as well as hoping to develop my students digitally.

Mohamad Mubarak’s post

in fact it wasn’t just a tool or a software but it was the whole course , but i think there is a very useful matter that i would like to draw your attention to.

my dear colleagues also gave me a great deal of knowledge that inspired me to do this exchange of information with my colleagues at school too

as for the tool or software ,as i said i liked them all .

i liked hot potatoes  /blogs/wikis/ and almost every thing else

but what i really like the most is the concept of flipped classroom , it’s so awesome because it has solutions for almost every problem in our education.

i have already started preparing my videos to try this great concept with my students( specially that we have this project 1:1 which gave every student a laptop and also for teachers)

thanks a lot DR. Mary for every thing

We are grateful

Dear Dr Mary

First of all I would like to thank you Dr Mary for your great effort exerted with us. Really, we learned too much information and gained a lot of knowledge and experience from this course. We need to say that without your help and your friendliness , we would have gained nothing.

As a secondary teacher. I meet many problems with my students along the school year. Among these problems; shortage of time, how to be innovative and creative in presenting the lessons and how to attract my students’attention and engage them. After this interesting course, I think that it will be different.

Till now I still remember the four videos we watched in the beginning of the course especially A hole in the wall and MOOCs. I was affected by the idea of flipped classrooms and I am sure that I will apply it in order to save time and to engage my students into learning.

Concerning the tools and software programs that we learned, in my opinion, I think that all of these tools are helpful and useful. If I am talking about the tool that I liked most, I will mention Online video creator maybe because I worked on its presentation with my lovely friend, Walaa. I liked this tool very much and of course I will start using it from now to prepare many attractive presentations for different lessons.

Besides this wonderful program, I admired all of the tools presented in the final session and I intend to explore and apply all of them for example:

  • Edmodo : I think that this program is so helpful especiall with sec. stage
  • Flash card creator : is a creative tool for designing cards for lessons
  • Google forms : I liked it very much and I will make use of it in preparing exams in an innovative way
  • Hot potatoes : I intend to use it also to prepare worksheets and exams for my students, I think that it will make it easier for me.
  • keepvid : I need to download videos for plays and novels that I teach so, I will depend on this program as it will help me.
  • Powtoon: I liked it so much and I will use it to make presentations accompanied with animation and photos.

In addition, I have to talk about my blog that I created with your help, Really I liked it so much and I am going to create more posts in order to include all the syllable items. Of course, it will help the students at their homes to find a reference that help them at any time.

Finally, I want to thank you again Dr Mary for this interesting course. I need to say that I learned from the the way of managing and dealing with the session. I mean teamwork and being helpful and friendly with us. I am looking forward to meet you again in another course.

With my best wishes

Shaymaa

Not only one tool but many useful tools

Really it wasn’t only one tool we have learnt in our course but many, but I liked the HOTPOTATOES the most wonderful tool for me and now I’m working on transfering all my sheets and my exercises to interactive exercises using this application to be able to use them inside my classroom even online or offline. Also the most appreciated web 2.0 tool is the BLOG and I already created the first blog for my students in prep three and still working on updating it. Also there are a lot of tools and software that I explored during the course and still need more effort from me to be able to use them properly such as quiz creator, digital story telling, powtoon, cmtasia and many other interesting and relevant tools and applications.

I really enjoyed what we did

right_track

In fact I have always been dreaming of applying modern technology into my class. I think I am on the right track as I acquired new concepts and ideas through The Professional Educator Diploma ETCT 502 Course.

Well, I learned how to use variable tools starting from the blog and ending by the wiki. I cannot forget Khan Academy about which I already told math teachers at my school. The flipped classroom which, I am sure, my students will enjoy. I learnt how to create a pooplet. Designing a form was something I have been looking for since long time, so now I can send my homework by e-mail to my students asking them to type their answers. Students will enjoy this of course as they hate holding pens, It is the nature of the digital natives. If I want to take my students’ opinion, my direct destination will be http://www.polldaddy.com.

Well, It was a very rich course. I learned a lot not only from our excellent instructor but from my dear colleagues as well. Sincere thanks and gratitude to all who shared in this course.

My favorite tools are blog and wix I can use them to flip my class , to share new ideas with my student , I’ll share comics , videos all these will be mine . It ‘s a great way to know how creative they could be .using blogs offers my students a chance to continue writing on something and I can know the way of their thinking.  .It ‘s a workspace for my students to share projects . It ‘s a very useful tool to communicate with me outside the class, with each other as students , with readers all over the world which can improve their writing

what I learn from this course

Thank you very much Dr.Mary for your great effort. we got a lot of information from this course. Really I was an immigrant and I’m going to be a native by using the different ways of technology in teaching my students. I admired the blog and I decided to start using it with my students even during the holiday to prepare them for next school year. The teaching tools which we discuss in the last session enlarged my concepts and ideas about the ways of teaching that we use inside our classes. The most tools that I admired are Edmedo and the comics I think that I could use Edmodo with my students to evaluate them, listen to their opinions and discuss the current events with them. It also give me the opportunity to communicate with their parents and discuss any problem with them to find solutions.I believe that there should be co-operation between the teachers and the parents. Using comics is very beneficial because it helps us to criticize many actions in a funny way.It helps us to make learning a funny and interesting thing.I enjoyed this course withe my clever colleagues and our great instructor.

I wish the Egyptian educator as a page to remain with all the sessions to be a reference for us if we forget anything and to communicate with you and with our colleagues.

I learned more than I expect

we must be in line with the quick steps of technology world wide , and encourage our students to share and collaborate their ideas  , so we must develop our ability to approach this electronic generation and go along with their growing knowledge ,so I create this technology platform ( Blog ) http://aymanabdwahab.wordpress.com/ . I plan to make this ( blog ) a communicative gate for students and parents to study , learn , watch their educational stories and dramas . all of all to share their ideas and express their educational needs and be updated with this accelerating glob. I learned how to create wiki  (http://englishnovelsataleoftwocities.wikispaces.com/) and create many applicationson Google doc (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1qCb9QREO0j1u8li8FumouCyVIQH_-898b6LOVbiQwi4/edit#slide=id.g18a5a93cf_010)
